Coming to Broadway Amelie —It's official: The new musical, Amelie , will be on Broadway this spring. Based on the [year] film, Amelie features a book by Craig Lucas ( An American in Paris ), and a score by Daniel Messe (music) and Nathan Tysen (lyrics), and is directed by Tony winner Pam MacKinnon ( Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? ). Amelie will play the Walter Kerr Theatre, with previews beginning March 9, 2017. Opening night is set for April 3, and the cast will be led by Tony nominee Phillipa Soo ( Hamilton ) and Adam Chanler-Berat ( Next to Normal , The Fortress of Solitude ). The Play That Goes Wrong —The Olivier-winning play The Play That Goes Wrong will bow on Broadway this spring. Robbie Fairchild Sets Return to NYCB Tony nominee Robert Fairchild  will depart An American in Paris  on March 13, one year after playing his first preview on Broadway. This will free up Fairchild to return to New York City Ballet  for the spring season, where he'll make his debut in Balanchine's Agon  and originate a role in the new Christopher Wheeldon  ballet. (Wheeldon, as you know, is the Tony-winning choreographer of An American in Paris. ) Garen Scribner , who is Fairchild's alternate on Broadway, will take over the role full time before heading out on the road, leading the first national tour of An American in Paris  alongside Sara Esty .  The New York Times and Broadway.com have more. Johnny Gallagher to Release Solo Album At long last, Tony Award winner  John Gallagher, Jr.  ( American Idiot , The Newsroom ) has announced that he has recorded and will release his debut solo album at the beginning of next year. Entertainment Weekly  reports that the album, Six Day Hurricane , will be released January 15, 2016, through Rockwood Music Hall Recordings. Gallagher recorded the album of original material a couple of years ago, with the help of Thad DeBrock, who was in the band Spring Awakening band. Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipients Announced 17 people will receive the 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor. The recipients will be presented with the honor by President Obama at a November 24 ceremony. Among those who will be honored are Barbra Streisand ; baseball greats Willie Mays and the late Yogi Berra ; Senator Barbara Mikulski ; Steven Spielberg ; Itzhak Perlman ; the late congresswoman Shirley Chisholm ; and James Taylor . Legendary songwriter Stephen Sondheim was selected for the honor last year, but was unable to attend the ceremony; he will celebrate the honor next week with Babs and the rest of the 2015 honorees. Little Dancer to Debut at the Kennedy Center Good news: dates have been announced for the debut of Little Dancer , the musical that is loosely based on the life and work of artist Edgar Degas . You might recall that NYCB principal dancer Tiler Peck is slated to play the title role, with four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines and Rebecca Luker also along for the ride. Little Dancer is written by Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music), and is directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman ( Big Fish , Double Feature ). No doubt aiming for Broadway, Little Dancer will play at the Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theater October 25-November 30.
